VE Day 2025

The 8th of May 2025 is the 80th anniversary of VE Day, or 'Victory in Europe Day', marking the end of the Second World War in Europe. VE Day was a great moment of relief for those fighting in Europe or for civilians on the home front who had endured so much during almost six years of conflict. A day when this country rejoiced at the conclusion of World War 2 and the home coming of the men and women who had so proudly and loyally served their king and country.

Those of us who had relatives who served in the war, (or even did their bit for the war effort at home), will have a real sense of pride that their own family was a part of this country’s glorious history.

Like us here at Butterfields, we are sure you will also think of the sacrifices those who lost their lives made … sacrifices so that we have been able to live in a world free of dictatorship.

The older members of our families tell us they remember the VE Day street parties and the real community spirit which arose from those gatherings - the singing of war time songs, hanging bunting in the streets, children’s laughter…spam sandwiches and cups of tea, sharing rations with family, friends and neighbours, everyone pulled together, everyone lending a hand to mark this unique moment in time.

There are now very few WW2 veterans still living, but to those who are, we send you our sincere thanks for all you did.

And to all of those in our community who are having their own 80th anniversary celebrations we say - enjoy! 🇬🇧
